Review of John's Gospel

Intro: We have covered so much ground over the last 12 weeks. It is important we remember and come back to the wonderful truths in this Gospel. Here are outlines of some of the important themes and subjects which John tells us about in such detail.

Jesus says "I am …"
In Exodus 3:13,14, when Moses asks God what name he should call Him when he talks to the people, God says, "I AM WHO I AM; … say … "I AM" has sent me to you." Jesus demonstrates the character and personality of God throughout the gospel of John with His "I AM" declarations. Also, through these statements He is declaring Himself to BE GOD., with the Father before the world began.
John 8:58
Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

John 6:35  And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

John 6:48   "I am the bread of life.

John 8:12   Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world.
He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

John 9:5   "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

John 10:7  Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
I am the door of the sheep."

John 10:9  "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved,
and will go in and out and find pasture.

John 10:11   "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

John 10:14  "I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.

John 11:25-27  Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"  She said to Him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."

John 14:6  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 15:1   "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

John 15:5  "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him,
bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

John 18:37  Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth."

John 4:26  Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He." (The Messiah)

John 13:19-20  "Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."

The Miracles

John chooses 7 miracles as "signs" to point us to the nature and love of our Father for us. The eighth miracle was performed by Jesus after His resurrection and demonstrates His continuing love and care of His disciples.

  1. John 1:1-11 Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
  2. John 4:46-54 The nobleman's son is healed – Jesus was at Cana again, and healed the boy at a distance in Capernaum.
  3. John 5:1-15 The man lying by the pool is healed after 38 years of sickness.
  4. John 6:1-14 Feeding the 5,000 with five loaves and 2 fishes, with 12 basketfuls of leftovers!
  5. John 6:16-21 Jesus walks on water to rescue the disciples from the storm and bring them to the other side. God rules over all the natural forces He has created!
  6. John 9:1-7 The man born blind receives his sight.
  7. John 11:1-44 Lazarus is sick and dies. Jesus comes 4 days after he has been buried and calls him out of the tomb. He walks out ALIVE!
  8. John 21:4-8 The risen Jesus stands on the shore and gives His disciples a bumper catch of fish when they throw the net back in the water. They had very clear directions which side to throw the net – Jesus knows where the fish are!

Jesus says "Come" and "Follow"

John 1:37
The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

John 1:39
He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day.

John 1:40
One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

John 1:43
The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me."

John 1:46
And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

John 10:4
"And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

John 10:5
"Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers."

John 10:27
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

John 12:26
"If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour.

John 13:36
Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward."

John 21:19
This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me."

John 21:22
Jesus said to him, "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me."

John 6:37
"All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

John 7:37
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink."

John 14:23  (Jesus and the Father come to those who love them!)
Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

Jesus and His Father are One

John 1:1-5  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John 1:18
No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

John 5:17-18  But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

John 8:42  Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.

John 8:57-58 Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"
Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

John 10:29-30
"My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one."

John 14:9-11 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works."
"Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me …"

John 14:20  "At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

John 16:27-28  "For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father."

 John 17:22-24
"And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world."

Jesus speaks what the Father speaks,
He does what the Father does.
John 5:19-21 (Amplified Bible) So Jesus answered them by saying, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, the Son is able to do nothing of Himself (of His own accord); but He is able to do only what He sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does is what the Son does in the same way [in His turn].  The Father dearly loves the Son and discloses to (shows) Him everything that He Himself does. And He will disclose to Him (let Him see) greater things yet than these, so that you may marvel and be full of wonder and astonishment. Just as the Father raises up the dead and gives them life [makes them live on], even so the Son also gives life to whomever He wills and is pleased to give it.

John 5:30 (Amplified) I am able to do nothing from Myself [independently, of My own accord—but only as I am taught by God and as I get His orders]. Even as I hear, I judge [I decide as I am bidden to decide. As the voice comes to Me, so I give a decision], and My judgment is right (just, righteous), because I do not seek or consult My own will [I have no desire to do what is pleasing to Myself, My own aim, My own purpose] but only the will and pleasure of the Father Who sent Me.
John 8:26-30  "I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him."
They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.
Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.
"And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him."
As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.

John 12:49-50  "For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is
everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak."

John 14:10-11   "Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

There is more of this review to follow, with the promises that Jesus gives His followers.
